St. Simons island- yes or no

St Simons Island is part of what they call the Golden Isles, which consists of: St Simons Island, Little Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Brunswick. An area along the Georgia Coast about 1.5 hrs south of Savana and about an hour north of Florida. This is our 2nd time here and this time it’s going to be overnight as we want to spend more time here to check it out as a possibility   for next years winter getaway from Maine.

We got here pretty early and were able to get to lunch at what is our current favorite restaurant- Barbara Jeans Seafood restaurant. The Misses had her she crab soup again to start with ( she says it’s the best she ever had)! This was followed up by an order of fish nuggets, fries, again a big hit. The batter is Very tasty and light so not to filling, other than the fact it is a huge portion. I went with country fried chicken and mashed potatoes along with a plate of tomatoes with house made citrus dressing- 2 thumbs up. We do have to give others a try just to be fair.

After our meal we walked the downtown again, with our first stop be the jewel shop as the misses wanted to get a permanent bracelet- she did and is now smiling and happy. From here we continued our walk and eventually ended back at our car and headed to our hotel for the night. The hotel – Sea Palms Resort just a short 15 minute drive from downtown. After checking in, I went back out and got a few sweets to hold us over for the night. It was late so I ended up at Harris Teeters Bakery (a grocery store chain down south) and picked up a few slices of cake and some milk for the morning.

That night I looked through several brochures on the area, trying to find out where the walking paths were, what kinds of paths they had and what other places might we check out now or next year if we come back. Our first stop the next morning was Fort Frederica. This seemed like a nice place to start, with nice walking paths and plenty to learn about the area. It’s a wide open area with some remnits of some of the buildings that were here around 1739 or so, along with what’s left of the Fort. They are still doing archeological digs here which is cool, and it’s wide open with all the walking paths being the former streets of the colony. We walked around for an hour or so, then decided to check out some other stuff before heading back to Beaufort.

There are some dozen or so walking paths with around 30-40 miles of trails, both inland and a few closer to the waters edge. Unfortunately there were also a ton of gnats flying around, and trust me folks, you love mosquitoes even if you don’t know it. These gnats, suck!

so will it be the place we come next year… time will tell.

We did make a new friend.
