Skyline Drive / Blue Ridge Parkway

Sorry about the title, I can’t remember which part of the drive was which, but it doesn’t matter as both are awesome drives. I’ve been lucky enough to drive both several times and each time was worth the effort to do. I say effort mostly because I wasn’t going to drive it a few times, but decided I’m closer not than I will be later, so I went there and dealt with the added time to get there and the added time to get to my destination as well, thankfully, most times I’m not in a big hurry or I leave extra time knowing going that way, is going to be a longer (time) to drive.

I know that some of it is closed because of storm damage from the Hurricane a few years back, but I will be checking as we hope to drive it again in October on a trip from Maine to Gatlinburg, TN. We will be taking this trip for our 50th, so who knows what and where we’ll see or do, but it will be fun.

Below are just of the few photo’s I’ve taken on these roads. One of the trips we stay at one of the hotels and had views down the Valley to die for, simply incredible. Lay in bed with the curtains drawn and wake to views that had you staying in bed longer then usual, and then getting out of bed, going forward to the deck and chairs and continue to be amazed.

While there aren’t Aton of places to get on and off the road, there are places along the way to do so, and most will get you into a quaint small town with plenty of charm and things to see. Once such point gets you to Lurray Caverns  – which is worth a trip just for this.

Along this wonderful drive are dozens of pull-off points (scenic views) – as well as great walking paths upon down trails, your choice. Many of these will take you to places you can’t see from the road (to bad:( ), such as waterfalls and other great view points.

We’ve met some wonderful people through our travels and often when we say we are from Maine, some how Foliage comes up, as does, NH and VT, and when NH comes up folks often ask about or will say how they love the Kancamagus Highway, while isa great drive, it doesn’t hold a candle to these 2 drives. So if you read this and have done the Kancamagus Highway, put these 2 drives on your bucket list, you will be so glad you did.
