Jekyll Island, cool place with Cooler Dead Tree Beach

My brother heard about this place from some of his friends who had just visited the area, and said, they have this cool dead / drift wood beach that is crazy cool and an awesome place for him to spend the day taking photo’s. Now he wasn’t able to come down that year, but I thought it would be nice to check out … glad I did, this beach is REAL cool to visit and an awesome place to take photo’s. We went back twice that year, and again, the following year with my brother.

The island itself is very nice, quaint, quiet, well maintained, with just enough to keep you busy. Several restaurants, a few stores, a few Great beaches and just enough stuff to check it out.

Now I should point out, Jeklly Island is part of what Georgia calls the Golden Isles ( a brief review of St. Simon’s Island is done too). What I need to point out, is that they like the island being small and not crowded and they manage to do this a number of ways, one of these is by charging a fee to come to the island ($10.00 per day). I’m sure the other ways are planning board based, but you needed to know it costs to get on the island.

So let’s back up a bit, to our first time here. Once we got on the island we went straight to a restaurant. The one we found and choose to eat at was Zachry’s Riverhouse. This was our first choice as it was the first one we came across while looking for a place to eat. Turned out not to be a bad choice. It was a nice spring day so we sat outside one the porch over-looking then water front (if you are tall and can see over things). I remember that there was some crab cakes, burger, chicken tenders (yeah I know, it’s a seafood place, how good did I expect the chicken to be) and key lime pie ordered and the crab cakes were a big hit. The burgers and key lime pie were ok, just not the star of the show, which means, yeah, the chicken tenders, weren’t the star either. and the star for me was the Lemonade. It food wasn’t all that bad as we went back the next time on the island, but we did find a better place for our 3rd visit.
